How To Bring Your Stainless Steel Jewellery Back To Life

Your jewellery should be worn, loved, and lived in; that's the Mahina philosophy! Whether it’s a beach day, a swim in the sea, or just your everyday shenanigans, your pieces are right there with you. That’s why I choose to create with stainless steel: it’s durable, ocean-friendly, and low-maintenance.

But here’s the thing…even the strongest metals deserve a little TLC every now and then! This is why stainless steel is such a good choice, and my favourite simple ways to bring it back to life when it needs a refresh!

Why Stainless Steel is the Ultimate Sea Soul Metal

Corrosion-resistant & ocean-proof: Unlike other metals, stainless steel won’t rust, tarnish, or turn that dreaded green/black shade after contact with water and salt. It's perfect if you’re someone (like me) who never takes your jewellery off...even for swims or salty beach days.

Strong & durable: Silver can bend or scratch, but stainless steel is tough. It can handle the knocks of everyday life while keeping its shine and shape. It’s basically the adventure-lover’s bestie!

Affordable without compromise: You get the premium look and feel of gold or silver (especially with plating) but at a price that makes beautiful, lasting jewellery more accessible.

Hypoallergenic: Many stainless steel grades, like 316L (surgical steel), are hypoallergenic, aka gentle on sensitive skin. That means more people can enjoy wearing it without irritation.

Perfect for plating: Gold or silver plating looks gorgeous on stainless steel because the solid, durable base helps it last longer. So you get strength and beauty all in one!

Top Tips for Bringing Your Jewellery Back to Life The Ocean-Friendly Way (No Harsh Chemicals Needed!)

Even stainless steel can gather a little dirt, sunscreen, or sea salt build-up over time. Luckily, it’s super easy to clean with things you already have at home.

1. The Soap & Water Method (The Easiest Way)

What you’ll need:

  • A small bowl

  • Warm water

  • A few drops of mild dish soap

  • A soft-bristled toothbrush (a kid’s one works perfectly!)

  • A clean, lint-free cloth

How to do it:

  1. Fill the bowl with warm, soapy water.

  2. Pop your jewellery in for 5–10 minutes to loosen dirt and salt.

  3. Gently scrub with the toothbrush to help you get into those chain links and crevices.

  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean, warm water.

  5. Dry completely with your soft cloth (this step is key to avoiding water spots).

2. The Baking Soda Paste (For a Deeper Clean)

What you’ll need: Baking soda, water, soft cloth/toothbrush

How to do it:

  1. Mix baking soda with a little water to make a paste.

  2. Gently rub onto your jewellery with a cloth or brush.

  3. Let it sit for a few minutes.

  4. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

3. The Vinegar Method (For Natural Shine)

What you’ll need: White vinegar + soft cloth

How to do it:

  1. Dampen the cloth with a little vinegar.

  2. Gently rub over your jewellery to restore its shine.

  3. Wipe off any residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry completely.

⚠️ Important: Avoid this method for gold or silver-plated stainless steel as vinegar can be too harsh and damage the plating.

Finishing Touches

Always give your jewellery a final polish with a dry, soft cloth for that fresh-out-of-the-box glow. And when you’re not wearing it, store it in a little soft pouch to protect it from scratches.

Final Thoughts

I love that stainless steel jewellery is built for everyday life; it'll be with you for those ocean swims, coffee runs, and sun-soaked holidays near and far. With just a few simple steps, you can keep your pieces glowing like the day you got them!

Jewellery isn’t meant to be hidden away in a box; it’s meant to live, love, and shine with you. By choosing the right jewellery accessories to suit your lifestyle, you'll be able to wear them until you'd love to sell them onto another jewellery lover to love and adore!

In the meantime, keep calm and carry on wearing those stainless steel beauties...and I'll continue making them for you.

With love, Yasmin x
